Sascha, why did you apply for the Julius Baer Graduate Programme?

Let me put it this way: the first time I had heard about the Julius Baer Graduate Programme was towards the end of my Bachelor studies, but at the time I felt I did not meet the requirements. After spending almost one year at a major Swiss bank and another year obtaining my Master’s degree, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in banking. The Julius Baer Graduate Programme offers the opportunity to work in three different business units, allowing me to gain insights into various areas of the firm while building a broad network at the Bank. The programme also contributes to my personal development by allowing me to develop my skills while pursuing my individual interests. I particularly enjoy the international work environment, and because banking is a global business, it is important to understand a bank’s global organisation and structure. Therefore, the possibility to do an international assignment was another draw of the Julius Baer Graduate Programme.

I have the freedom to work independently on my tasks, make my own contribution and receive constructive feedback about my work.

What do you like best about your function?

I have the opportunity to work closely with senior Chief Risk Officer (CRO) and Front staff from the head office as well as from all international locations, which allows me to benefit from their expertise and network. In addition, this international exposure allows me to learn how to interact with different work cultures from Asia to the Middle East, Europe, and Latin America. It gives me insights into many interesting projects across the globe and further helps me to understand the Bank’s business and organisational structure. Furthermore, I have the freedom to work independently on my tasks, make my own contribution and receive constructive feedback about my work. Graduates have no shortage of opportunities to get to know the Bank and its staff better. We are free to organise “Shadowing Days” in which we visit our fellow graduates’ departments and meet their coworkers. We are also eligible to participate in training sessions and presentations offered by all business units across the Bank. Finally, but equally important, the Bank and its employees organise several social activities, which is a great way to get to know my colleagues in a more relaxed setting.

What is important to you in your future career?

I prefer to have a certain level of flexibility and freedom of choice in my career and personal development. And because the programme offers a lot of flexibility in planning, it is a perfect fit for me. I would like to continue to grow, learn, and understand Julius Baer and the banking sector at large, to play a role in its transformation and potentially shape its future. Through my experience at Julius Baer, I have learned that I like to work in a team-oriented, professional yet sociable setting that encourages out-of-the box thinking, and that I particularly enjoy the challenges of working in a fast-paced, international environment. Together, all of these elements provide me with a sense of confidence and security, contributing to my overall job and personal satisfaction.
