Secular Outlook 2020 - 2029, Year II
Every year in autumn, senior experts from our asset management and research departments gather together to reassess secular economic, financial and social trends around the world.
It is now a year on since the first edition of the Secular Outlook 2020–2029 was published in December 2019. We are in the midst of a global pandemic and experiencing one of the worst economic downturns known to the Western world – the only one in modern times triggered by an external shock. In this highly unusual environment, the trends we predicted just before the coronavirus started to plague the global economy are now accelerating and taking shape. We cannot help but feel as though someone pushed the fast-forward button.
In this issue of Secular Outlook, we present our ‘second take’ at the catalysts and trends for the next decade.
Key secular trends 2020–2029
Every decade is characterised by a different economic and investment environment. The outperformers of the previous decade are unlikely to stay at the top of the performance league tables in the next decade. At Julius Baer, we adopt a forward-looking investment approach, structuring our asset allocation to capture returns resulting from secular trends. We strategically position our clients’ portfolios according to these secular trends. In our annual Secular Outlook process, we identify key macroeconomic and capital market trends, as well as key risk factors for the next five years.
Investing is and always will be at the frontier between art and science. By sharing our Secular Outlook with you, we hope to help you position your portfolio for the next decade.
