Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra
Creating opportunities for European orchestral musicians to forge their talents
The Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester (GMJO) was established by Claudio Abbado before the fall of the Iron Curtain, and is based in Vienna, Austria. Since its establishment, the orchestra has served to provide extraordinary concert experiences through its talent and professionalism, musicianship without borders, as well as its dedication and enthusiasm.
Each year, over 2,500 talented orchestral musicians from all over Europe apply to the youth orchestra. After a strict selection procedure, those who are chosen are able to take part in orchestral projects, where they work with the most important conductors and soloists of our time. Concerts are given in renowned concert halls, at leading festivals in Europe, and all over the world. In this manner, members of the GMJO are able to acquire experience that is decisive for their musical development and future careers as professional musicians. Thus, many former members of the GMJO work in important orchestras all over Europe, and various orchestras and ensembles have been established out of the GMJO.
Julius Baer, as part of its commitment to talent development and classical music, has supported the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester for over 20 years.
